This is a challenging and confusing time for many young graduates. Where do you start? What should you be doing? David provides his expert advice.


3 Job Search Tips for New Graduates


1.Discover Your Destination(s)

Tip: If you know what you want to do, research people that have that job or that are in that industry and see what path they took right out of school. Don’t try to recreate the wheel.

Tip: Don’t know where you want to go?  It’s hard to set sail on a job search if you don’t know what you want to do. Determine what you’re interested in and passionate about now and identify the industries and companies that might fit based on your interests and passions.

In both cases, there will be entry-level jobs and internships to get your foot in the door with the companies/industries that interest you. Remember, entry-level jobs are not glamorous, they are an ‘entry’ into the company/industry. Expect to pay your dues, put in your time, and prove your worth.  Remember this is a stepping stone for your career.

2. Resume – Research and Customize

Tip: Do not use the same resume for all positions. Customize your resume to match the position you are applying for.

Tip: Research the company and people before an interview and customize the interview questions you prepare based on what you find, rather than using generic questions.

Don’t forget, after every interview to write customized thank you note. Reference something you discussed in the interview and briefly recap what you can provide for the organization.

3. Social Media Makeover

Tip: Revamp and lockdown your social media accounts. Make sure only those close to you can see your information, posts, and photos.

Tip: Create a LinkedIn account, get started by opening an account, put all your resume information on it (education, work history, achievements, volunteer and organization experiences), add a professional headshot and start connecting with alumni. You can also get professors or previous managers to write your LinkedIn recommendations.

Companies are going to research you, make sure your online presence reflects who you want to be professionally. Make sure to determine what is already out there, try searching your name and location in search engines and see what comes up.
